About this Clinic

We are a team of midwives, family physicians and a nurse/lactation consultant who are passionate about providing care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We look after you from the time you get pregnant, during your birth and after birth by providing care for you and your baby for up to 6-8 weeks. We focus on providing care that is aligned with your values and informed by the latest evidence. At St. Paul’s Maternity Care we focus on the physical, mental and social wellness of our patients and their families.

We are a collaborative care clinic, which means that you may see both a family physician and a midwife during your care. Currently, our family doctors provide care during your pregnancy; at the time of birth you may have either one of our family doctors or a midwife look after you. After your baby is born, you may see a family physician or a midwife. We also work with a nurse who is a lactation consultant. She sees all our families during pregnancy and postpartum to provide breastfeeding support and more. Collaborative care has many benefits, including increased satisfaction of care, increased rates of breastfeeding and increased rates of vaginal birth.

We accept referrals directly from pregnant people, as well as from physicians and midwives. If you are a patient without a prenatal care provider and want to deliver at St. Paul’s Hospital, please complete the referral form below. If you have any questions, please contact the clinic by calling 604-806-9342 or emailing maternityclinic@providencehealth.bc.ca.

Clinical trials & research

Advances in treatments are all thanks to medical research. While participating in research is a decision you should make for yourself in consultation with your care team, there is much activity in this area so please ask us about our research programs if you’re interested.

By taking part in research, you can help us all learn more about advancing health outcomes and find better ways to help people live and thrive. While you cannot assume benefit to yourself, your participation can make a difference in improving care for future patients.

The following clinical trials are currently enrolling volunteers. Please ask your care team for more information or contact the research team listed on each study or trial. For other information about research at Providence Health Care, please visit Providence Research.

Medical & professional referrals

We accept referrals directly from pregnant people, as well as from physicians and midwives. If you are a physician or other health-care professional, please complete the referral form below. Patients can self-refer by completing the referral form, calling 604-806-9342 or emailing maternityclinic@providencehealth.bc.ca.

Once we receive the referral, our clinic administrative assistants will contact you within 3-5 days to arrange an appointment time. It is helpful if you or your doctor send us all the information you have on the pregnancy prior to the first visit (for example: bloodwork, ultrasounds, records from previous pregnancies, etc.)

Prior to your visit, our administrative staff will make sure that your health coverage is active. If you do not have health coverage in B.C (called Medical Services Plan or MSP), you are considered a private pay patient and there are some extra steps to complete prior to us seeing you.
