You should check in at the reception desk. You will then go to the nursing station to change into a hospital gown. 

A nurse will complete your admission history and measure your vital signs. The nurse will also ask you for your list of medications. 

You will also be given an intravenous (IV) for sedation and pain medication. Please note sedation is optional. If you do not want sedation, we will respect your wishes. 

Once you are ready, the nurse will bring you to the endoscopy room for your procedure. 

During your procedure, a doctor will insert a scope into your body. Depending on your procedure, the scope will either go up your rectum or down your esophagus.

Once your procedure is complete, you will go to the recovery room. You need to stay in the recovery room for 20 to 60 minutes.

Afterwards, you can go home. If you were sedated, you will not be able to drive for 24 hours. You must have a responsible adult pick you up. This person must come to the GI Clinic to get you. 

We will give you discharge instructions. No medical supplies will be sent home with you. 

We will also let you know how to receive your results. Sometimes, you need to make a follow up appointment for your results and other times we will follow up with you directly. Often, we will also give you preliminary results before you leave the hospital.
