Hyperparathyroidism
An overview of Providence Health Care's services and resources for patients with hyperparathyroidism.
Overview
Hyperparathyroidism is when your parathyroid glands make too much hormone.
Your parathyroid glands are tiny glands located in your neck behind your thyroid. They make the parathyroid hormone (PTH). This hormone maintains the level of calcium and phosphate in your blood.
Hyperparathyroidism can lead to conditions like:
Types of hyperparathyroidism
There are three main types of hyperparathyroidism.
Diagnosis & testing
We usually find hyperparathyroidism when you take a blood test for another reason. The blood test will show you have high calcium levels.
When this happens, we refer you to a parathyroid surgeon. They can assess your condition using other diagnostic tests, including:
- Imaging tests like X-ray, ultrasound or computer tomography (CT) scans: These tests show pictures of your parathyroid glands. This can help identify which parathyroid gland is having trouble and its size. We may also look at your kidneys to see if the extra calcium is impacting them.
- Urine test: This test measures the amount of calcium in your urine over 24 hours. It can show how well your kidneys are removing the extra calcium from your blood.
- Bone density testing: This tests your bone strength and looks for signs of osteoporosis. We use dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to see how much calcium is in your bones. Usually, we scan your lower spine and hips.
Treatment & management
If you are diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, you will be referred to an endocrinologist or parathyroid surgeon. Your treatment plan depends on the symptoms and cause of your hyperparathyroidism.

Clinical trials & research
Advances in treatments for hyperparathyroidism are all thanks to medical research. While participating in research is a decision you should make for yourself in consultation with your care team, there is much activity in this area. Please ask us about our research programs if you’re interested.
By taking part in research, you can help us all learn more about advancing health outcomes and find better ways to help people live and thrive. While you don't benefit directly, your participation can help care for future patients.
The following clinical trials are currently enrolling volunteers. Please ask your care team for more information. You can also contact the research team listed on each study or trial. For other information about research at Providence Health Care, please visit Providence Research.
