About this clinic

The Thyroid Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital diagnoses and manages thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer. We are the first clinic of this kind in British Columbia.

The thyroid is a small gland at the base of the throat that makes several hormones that affect how your body works:

  • They support how your body uses fats and carbohydrates
  • They help control body temperature
  • They affect your heart rate

 Thyroid diseases and conditions include:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Thyroid nodules and cysts
  • Thyroid goiters
  • Thyroiditis
  • Thyroid cancer

Our team includes endocrinologists, who are doctors that specialize in thyroid disorders. All specialists are faculty members of the University of British Columbia Medical School. They are also involved in research and education.

The centre also works with other specialists at Providence Health Care. We strive to make sure each patient gets the care they need for the best possible outcome.

Clinical trials & research

Advances in thyroid condition treatments are all thanks to medical research. While participating in research is a decision you should make for yourself in consultation with your care team, there is much activity in this area so please ask us about our research programs if you’re interested.

By taking part in research, you can help us all learn more about condition and find better ways to help people like you live and thrive with the condition. While you cannot assume benefit to yourself, your participation can make a difference in improving care for future patients.

The following clinical trials are currently enrolling volunteers. Please ask your care team for more information or contact the research team listed on each study or trial. For other information about research at Providence Health Care, please visit Providence Research.
