During your pregnancy
The Pregnancy, Birthing and Newborn Centre's approach to care.

Overview
We are passionate about parents and babies. We work hard to ensure that every family receives the right care at the right time at the right place. Whether you’re having a low-risk birth, a more complex pregnancy, or a planned c-section, our skilled staff are here to support you.
We welcome all families with inclusive, accessible, and comprehensive maternity care services.
For Indigenous parents, we have Indigenous Wellness Liaisons. They can provide health care advocacy, cultural and emotional support as well as access to traditional wellness and ceremonies. If you want to use their services, your maternity care provider will connect you. Our Indigenous Wellness Liaisons can help you plan what cultural supports you would like during labour and right after your baby is born.

We have a multidisciplinary team to support you during your pregnancy, delivery and recovery:

We are a teaching hospital with students from many different professions. The students are an important part of your health-care team. If you have any concerns about students being involved in your care, please speak to your health-care provider.
Choosing a practitioner
If you want to have your baby at St. Paul’s Hospital, the first step is to find a care provider to look after you during pregnancy and childbirth. Your care provider can be a family doctor, registered midwife or obstetrician. Your choice will depend on your health-care needs and personal preferences.

Prenatal classes
We offer prenatal classes to help you make informed decisions about your care and prepare for the birth of your child.
Wraparound care
We are one of B.C.’s provincial centres for high-risk maternal care. About 20 percent of the babies born at St. Paul’s Hospital are born to parents with complex medical, social or obstetrical needs. Our wraparound care ensures they are fully supported. Our goal is to normalize the experience of pregnancy as much as possible for those with complex care needs.
