About this clinic

If you have kidney disease and your kidneys aren’t working well, you'll need to replace their function. One way to do this is with a kidney transplant. Another option is a treatment called dialysis. It can replace a certain percentage of your kidney function. Dialysis removes extra salt, extra water and accumulated waste. You may do dialysis for your whole life, or until you receive a kidney transplant.

There are two main types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. This page tells you about the peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis services offered by Providence Health Care.

Medical & professional referrals

Most referrals to independent dialysis therapies come from the kidney care clinics. There can also be referrals from in-centre or community-based dialysis units or from the transplant program.

If your patient is on a home-based therapy and moving to Vancouver, contact the St. Paul’s Hospital Independent Dialysis Therapies Program at 604-806-9017.
