About this clinic

In 1982, the first cochlear implant surgery in Canada was performed at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Since then, our surgeons have completed over 680 cochlear implant surgeries. Over the years, our audiologists have provided care to over 1,000 adult cochlear implant patients. We work closely with the BC Children's Hospital Cochlear Implant Program, facilitating the transfer of their patients when they reach 18 years of age.

The BC Adult Cochlear Implant Program offers a full range of cochlear implant services for adults with complex hearing needs, including: assessments, surgery and rehabilitation. We are a provincially funded program, through the Ministry of Health, mandated to provide cochlear implant services to adults who meet candidacy criteria for cochlear implants across British Columbia. In addition, adults from the Yukon Territory regularly receive cochlear implant services through our program, with all relevant funding provided by Yukon Health and Social Services.

The BC Adult Cochlear Implant Program aims to provide improved access to sound for people with significant hearing loss who have exhausted all medical options for treatment and who demonstrate limited benefit from hearing aids. Our goal is to provide access to sound and improve auditory/oral communication through hearing rehabilitation via cochlear implantation. We strive to provide care that contributes to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being of each individual we serve through improved hearing function.

From the Burrard Street entrance: Turn left and walk past the gift shop. Go up the stairs and turn right. Walk down the long hallway until you reach the central area with multiple elevators. Walk past the elevators and turn right. The entrance to the BC Adult Cochlear Implant Program is the last blue doors to the left at the end of the hallway.

From the Thurlow Street entrance: The entrance to the BC Adult Cochlear Implant Program is the first blue door to the right as you enter the hospital.

From the elevators: As you exit the elevators, follow the signs to the Audiology clinic. The entrance to the BC Adult Cochlear Implant Program is the last blue doors to the left at the end of the hallway.
