Life-Saving Digital Mammography Tops Angel Campaign Wish List

Vancouver, November 27, 2007 — A digital mammography machine for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital — which may prove effective in detecting breast cancer for the high proportion of Asian women treated there — tops the wish list for this year’s Angel Campaign.
“Asian women have high density breast tissue which makes early detection of breast cancer difficult,” said Dr. Richard Lee, a radiologist at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. “Researchers from the University of North Carolina have found that digital mammography is effective in detecting cancer in women with high density breast tissue.”

Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health Delivers 2007 Alan Bernstein Distinguished Lectureship

Providence Health Care Investigator Awarded $300,000 Johnson & Johnson Grant for Research into Pediatric Asthma

Vancouver, November 21, 2007 — Research into pediatric asthma received a boost as Johnson & Johnson awarded Dr. Darryl Knight, a researcher with the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia, with a $300,000 Focused Funding grant.
This three-year grant from Johnson & Johnson’s Corporate Office of Science & Technology will support Dr. Knight’s basic research into asthma. According to the Asthma Society of Canada, more than 500,000 Canadian children suffer from asthma.

Inaugural Director Appointed for Innovative New Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital

Vancouver, November 19, 2007 — The fight to detect, prevent and care for heart and lung diseases has taken a significant leap forward with the appointment of internationally renowned heart and lung researcher Dr. Bruce McManus as the inaugural Director of the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital.
Launched in June 2007, the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul's Hospital merges and integrates all of Providence’s heart and lung research, education and care programs under one umbrella. It is the only such institute of its kind in Canada.

Restored Sight Results in Gift of $66,000 to Mount Saint Joseph Hospital

Vancouver, November 14, 2007 — Vancouver, November 8, 2007 - Grateful for surgery that restored his vision, Vancouver businessman Arnold Silber and his wife Anita recently donated $66,000 to Tapestry Foundation for Health Care to purchase a state-of-the-art laser treatment system for retinal surgical procedures at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ).
“I am indebted to Dr. Bill Ross who performed the procedure and gave me back my sight,” explained Silber. “When he asked if I could help purchase some new surgical equipment for the hospital, I told him ‘You’ve got it.’

These are the words that will echo outside St. Paul’s Hospital this Friday, November 16 at 6:50 pm when more than 400 candle-carrying guests gather at Burrard and Helmcken to launch the hospital’s 2007 Lights of Hope display.

When the countdown is complete, the massive light display, a fundraiser for St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, will be officially switched on followed by a firework display high above the hospital.

B.C. Centres Receive $1.2 million To Study Heart Disease and HIV

Volunteers To Construct 10th Anniversary Light Display Saturday

Most of the men and women who will be working high on the cherry picker trucks or scaling the rungs of the scaffolding are busy construction workers who are giving up a precious day off to volunteer their time and expertise. Some have been volunteering for nine years. Given BC's current construction boom, it's very valuable time indeed.

Vancouver, November 1, 2007 — As part of a province-wide commitment, hospitals and health facilities across Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care will butt out permanently starting May 31st, 2008, World No Tobacco Day.
The policy prohibits smoking in or on all premises owned or operated by the health authority, including care facilities, hospitals and grounds.

PHC Announces $7.5 Million in New Research Funding

Vancouver, October 16, 2007 — A total of $7.5 million in new research funding for Providence Health Care and its partners was announced today. Of that total, $4.25 million is being contributed by Pfizer Canada.
The first investment is for targeted research at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the second is to establish the first Canadian research chair in cardiovascular disease prevention. Both research initiatives are to be housed in St. Paul’s Hospital, part of Providence Health Care.
