Vancouver, November 23, 2007 — Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health, will deliver this year’s Alan Bernstein Distinguished Lectureship for 2007 at St. Paul’s Hospital, part of Providence Health Care.
Dr. Nabel is a renowned physician-scientist who has made numerous contributions to our understanding of vascular biology while at the University of Michigan, including processes important to the development of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.

Vancouver, November 21, 2007 — Research into pediatric asthma received a boost as Johnson & Johnson awarded Dr. Darryl Knight, a researcher with the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia, with a $300,000 Focused Funding grant.
This three-year grant from Johnson & Johnson’s Corporate Office of Science & Technology will support Dr. Knight’s basic research into asthma. According to the Asthma Society of Canada, more than 500,000 Canadian children suffer from asthma.

Vancouver, November 14, 2007 — The 2007 Lights of Hope display will light up for the first time Friday, November 16 at 6:50 pm. The lighting will heralded by fireworks and the cheers of more than 400 guests expected to gather across the road from St. Paul’s Hospital at Helmcken and Burrard.

These are the words that will echo outside St. Paul’s Hospital this Friday, November 16 at 6:50 pm when more than 400 candle-carrying guests gather at Burrard and Helmcken to launch the hospital’s 2007 Lights of Hope display.

When the countdown is complete, the massive light display, a fundraiser for St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, will be officially switched on followed by a firework display high above the hospital.

Vancouver, November 13, 2007 — A team with the Pacific Lung Health Centre, part of the Providence Heart and Lung Institute at St. Paul's Hospital, was awarded one of seven awards at the 2007 International Conference on Chronic Disease Management held in Calgary earlier this month. The conference was co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) through its regional affiliate the Pan American Health Organization.

Vancouver, November 2, 2007 — More than 100 volunteers are expected to gather at St. Paul's Hospital bright and early this Saturday morning (Nov. 3rd) to construct the 10th anniversary Lights of Hope display.
Most of the men and women who will be working high on the cherry picker trucks or scaling the rungs of the scaffolding are busy construction workers who are giving up a precious day off to volunteer their time and expertise. Some have been volunteering for nine years. Given BC's current construction boom, it's very valuable time indeed.

Vancouver, October 22, 2007 — A leading interventional cardiologist at the Providence Heart and Lung Institute at St. Paul's Hospital this afternoon successfully performed his 100th percutaneous heart valve replacement, a new surgical technique that has transformed the lives of patients too sick to undergo conventional treatment.
