Dr. Hayley Merkeley is the Medical Director of the Adult Red Cell Disorders Program of British Columbia. Originally from southeastern BC, she completed her medicine degree, internal medicine, and hematology training at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Merkeley further specialized with a fellowship in red cell disorders at the University of Toronto and holds a Master’s of Public Health from the University of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Merkeley’s main research and academic interests lie in sickle cell disease, thalassemia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and porphyria. In addition to her clinical work, she is actively involved in medical education and is Co-Director of the UBC Hematology Residency Training Program.  She has previously participated in UBC affiliated global health projects in Honduras, Uganda, and Nepal.

Balancing her professional and personal life, Dr. Merkeley enjoys spending time with her two young children and maintaining her Spanish language skills.
