We are committed to creating educational opportunities for occupational therapy students to enable best practice now and in the future. We aspire to offer up to 20 placements to students studying in an occupational therapy program at an accredited Canadian University annually.
Overview
Occupational therapy at Providence uses therapeutic approaches that are responsive to client needs. We advocate for recognition of client values and dignity. We provide leadership in developing, implementing and evaluating occupational therapy and interdisciplinary approaches to the management of clients throughout the continuum of care.
Level 1-3 students are suitable for placements in all areas of practice including acute care, rehabilitation and residential care. All occupational therapists with one or more years of experience are expected to offer a student placement annually. Placements are traditionally 1:1, student:preceptor but other models are considered.
Process for admission
Placements are organized through HSPnet Call for Offers and directly between the university OT Fieldwork Coordinator in conjunction with the Research, Education and Practice Coordinator for OT at PHC. Students may not organize placements outside of this process, and any changes to requests including dates for placements must be approved by the coordinators.
Students from the University of British Columbia (UBC) have first priority to accept these offers, and then those not matched are made available to other accredited programs through the National Fieldwork Placement Service.
Orientation
- Once you have received confirmation from your school of your placement at PHC, please email a letter of introduction to Anna Nguyen, Research, Education and Practice Coordinator for OT anguyen4@providencehealth.bc.ca who will connect you with your assigned preceptor and provide you with additional information specific to your placement.
- Review the Orientation page and complete all requirements that are applicable to you.
- Patient Information System - students at a site with CST Cerner (electronic health record system) in use will need access. Refer to the Computer Training page to learn about access and training. Additional systems access will be discussed during orientation week.
Observations
Shadow observation experience may be considered for up to a half day maximum for those that are not organized as part of the OT school curriculum. Please submit your requests to the Student Placement Coordinator describing the type of placement you are interested in, your availability and association.
These shadow observations will not require Orientation. You will however be required to sign the Confidentiality Undertaking found on the Orientation page and additional forms provided to you by the Student Placement Coordinator.
