Fluoroscopy

Learn more about what to expect with a fluoroscopy test.

Overview

Fluoroscopy is an imaging test that uses X-rays to produce real-time video images.

This allows a specialized doctor (radiologist) to see your internal structure and function.

Preparing for the test

The steps to get ready for your fluoroscopy test will depend on your specific procedure. We will give you instructions when you book your appointment.

During the test

Depending on the area being imaged, you may need to change into a patient gown or remove jewelry.

Sometimes we use contrast dye to better visualize the area of interest. You may receive the dye by mouth or through an IV.

We will ask you to sit or lie on an X-ray table. We may also ask you to move into different positions, such as onto your side. You may also need to hold your breath at times during the procedure.

The length of your exam will depend on your specific procedure. The average time is 30 to 60 minutes.

After the test

A radiologist will review your test results and write a report for your doctor.

Call your doctor if you have not received your test results in 14 days.
