Flexible sigmoidoscopy

An overview of a flexible sigmoidoscopy, why you would get one and what to expect during the procedure.

Overview

A flexible sigmoidoscopy (flex sig) is used to inspect the rectum and sigmoid colon (the section of large intestine closest to the rectum).

A camera cased in a thin flexible tube will be inserted through the rectum to visualize this area.

Preparing for the test

Flex sigs are performed at the Gastrointestinal Clinic. Before coming in, you will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for the procedure.

After the test

Flex sigs do not usually require sedation, so you can plan to drive home after your sigmoidoscopy if you wish.
