Bone density test
Learn more about getting a bone density test, including how to prepare for it and what to expect.
Overview
A bone density test (also called bone densitometry) is a type of X-ray that checks the amount of minerals (like calcium) in your bones.
You might have this test to:
- Check the strength of your bones
- See if you have osteoporosis or monitor your treatment
- Find out if you are more likely to break (fracture) a bone
A bone density test is quick, simple, and painless. It can check a single bone, a part of your body, or your whole body.
The test does not use nuclear medicine, and you do not receive any injections. There is no known risk, and the amount of radiation is very small.
Preparing for the test
- 10 days before the test: Do not schedule any nuclear medicine tests or contrast dye tests. These tests can affect your bone density test results.
- 24 hours before the test: Do not take any calcium supplements, antacids, or multivitamins.
- Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you can eat normally before the bone density scan.
- If you can't make your appointment, let us know. If we know in advance, we can give your appointment to another patient.
On the day of the test
- Let us know if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
- Do not wear clothes with snaps, metal buttons, or zippers. Wear comfortable pants, shorts, or a skirt with a drawstring or elastic waistband.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to fill out a form about your medical history. Check in with the receptionist when you arrive.
- Bring your photo ID and BC Care Card (personal health number).
- Children are not allowed in the exam room. Do not bring children under 12 unless you also bring someone to care for them during the test.
- Do not wear perfume, cologne, or aftershave. Some people are allergic to these scents and can have strong reactions.
- You might need to change into a hospital gown.
During the test
- Your appointment will take 10 to 30 minutes.
- You will lie down on a table.
- We will use a low-dose X-ray beam to scan your hip, lower spine, or wrist.
- It is important to stay very still during the test so the pictures are clear.
After the test
There are no after-effects from this test.
We will send your results to your doctor within five working days. If your doctor does not receive your results within two weeks, ask them to contact us.
