Overview

Occupational therapy helps prevent and solve problems in everyday life. 

This includes things that interfere with your ability to:

  • Take care of yourself, such as get dressed, eat or move around the house.
  • Be productive, such as go to work or school and do things in your community.
  • Enjoy your leisure time, such as sports, gardening or social activities.

Occupational therapists are the primary providers of occupational therapy services. They are often called OTs. They work with patients to help overcome challenges so they can live their lives to the fullest. 

These challenges might be from:

  • Injury
  • Illness
  • Disability
  • Mental health issues
  • Social factors
  • Aging

What to expect

The OTs at Providence Health Care will:

  • Listen to you, your family, and caregivers. OTs review your needs as a whole and connect you with resources and supports in your community.
  • Assess your environment and evaluate your abilities. OTs show you how to make small, simple changes to improve your daily life.
  • Suggest changes to your physical surroundings. OTs focus on making your daily activities easy and safe.
  • Provide you with personalized strategies. OTs consider your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

OT services are available across many Providence Health Care sites, such as:

  • Inpatient acute care, including mental health 
  • Inpatient rehabilitation 
  • Tertiary mental health 
  • Long-term care 
  • Outpatient clinics
