St. Vincent's Heather Long-term Care Home

St. Vincent’s Heather will redefine the way we care for seniors with compassion and community.

A new era in seniors' care

St. Vincent’s Heather is more than just a care home; it’s a promise of freedom, choice, and dignity for seniors. As a 13-storey, 240-bed long-term care facility, St. Vincent’s Heather will reimagine caregiving, placing the well-being and happiness of residents at the heart of everything we do. Located on the historic site of St. Vincent’s Hospital, which served the Vancouver community for 65 years, this new home will offer wraparound services tailored to residents' personal needs and preferences.

Our mission is to empower seniors to live life on their own terms through Providence Living’s Home for Us model of care. This approach transforms traditional caregiving by shifting from task-oriented routines to one that prioritizes emotional connections and relationships. Care is tailored to each resident’s retained skills, abilities, and interests, ensuring they thrive in a vibrant, supportive community.

The Home for Us model is built on three guiding principles:

  • Emotional connections matter most
  • Residents direct each moment
  • Home is not a place, it’s a feeling

These principles encourage residents to participate in everyday activities like cooking and socializing, fostering a sense of belonging and security. Families and loved ones remain a vital part of this experience, sharing in the daily moments that make life meaningful.

Designed with community in mind

The home will consist of 20 households, each designed to accommodate 12 residents in single-bed rooms with wheelchair-accessible ensuite bathrooms. These households will also feature common spaces, including living rooms, dining rooms, and activity areas—replicating the warmth and comfort of a typical home. Additionally, some suites will have connecting doors to keep couples and families together, supporting close relationships in a comforting environment.

  • Community garden
  • 37-space childcare centre
  • Community hall

These services will enable residents to live vibrant and active lives while staying connected to their community.

A partnership for the future

Providence Health Care has partnered with Providence Living—a non-profit organization established in 2017 by Providence Health Care—to operate the site. The land is being contributed by Providence Health Care, with support from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver. St. Vincent's Heather is set to open in fall 2028, marking the beginning of a new era in seniors' care, where we prioritize the dignity, freedom, and joy of our residents.

Families stay together

At St. Vincent’s Heather, we understand the importance of keeping families close. That’s why we’ve designed special suites with connecting doors to allow couples and families to remain together. These thoughtfully crafted living spaces enable loved ones to continue sharing their lives while receiving the care they need. By supporting these close connections, we ensure that residents can enjoy the comfort and reassurance of having family nearby, enriching their experience at St. Vincent's Heather and fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness.
