Pre-Admission Clinic

A nurse will come to get you at your appointment time. The nurse will spend around 30 to 45 minutes with you to:

• Confirm your planned surgery
• Measure your height and weight and take your blood pressure
• Do a pre-surgical health assessment
• Confirm or update your health history
• Confirm or update your medications
• Provide pre-surgical instructions to prepare you for surgery
• Provide instructions for after your surgery, such as activities you can or cannot do

During this meeting, the anesthesiologist will:

• Confirm your planned surgery
• Ask you about your current health status
• Ask about any history of anesthesia related problems
• Review your medical health history
• Discuss the anesthetic plan and possible options based on your health history and type of surgery
• Provide instructions on which medications to stop or continue leading up to surge

Before you see the nurse or after you see the anesthesiologist, you may see an Ostomy Registered Nurse to assess if you need an ostomy. An ostomy is a surgically created opening made into the bowel or urinary tract for to allow waste materials (feces/urine) to leave the body. We will let you know the time in advance when we book your PAC appointment.

You may need to do some tests. For example:

• Blood work is usually done in the PAC clinic when the lab personnel is available.
• ECG and any x-rays will be completed at the end of the appointment.

Your visit should take about two hours.

The nurse and anesthesiologist will call you separately. This means their calls will display as two separate numbers. Typically, you will speak with the nurse first, and then with the anesthesiologist. Please stay near your phone for both of these calls.

We thank you for your patience if there is a delay in calling you. Sometimes appointments can run behind as the day progresses.

The nurse will ask you for an email address to send you all the information you discussed. If you do not use email, you can write down the information provided during the call. If you'd like, we can mail this information to your home address.

This doctor will review your medical health history with you and discuss the anesthetic plan. You will go over possible options based on your health history and type of surgery. The doctor will tell you which medications to stop or continue to take, leading up to surgery.
